The Baidyanath Jyotirlinga, popularly known as Baba Dham, is situated in Deoghar, Jharkhand. It is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in India and is also revered as a Shaktipeeth. The temple complex features 22 temples with pyramidal towers. During the holy Hindu month of Shravan, millions of saffron-clad pilgrims carry gangajal on foot from Sultanganj (105 km away) to offer to the deity, making it one of the largest human gatherings.

Historical & Mythological Significance

According to Ramayana legends, Ravana performed penance to please Shiva and obtain the Shiva Linga to take to Sri Lanka. Shiva agreed but warned Ravana that if he placed the Linga on the ground, it would remain fixed there. While carrying it back, Ravana had to hand it over to a cowherd (Varuna in disguise) to answer nature's call. The cowherd placed it down, and it got fixed in Deoghar. Ravana cut his head in frustration but Shiva healed him as a 'Vaidya' (doctor), hence the name Baidyanath.
