Tucked away in the lush green Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra, Bhimashankar Temple is the source of the holy Bhima River. It is the fifth Jyotirlinga and is surrounded by a rich wildlife sanctuary. The temple is built in the grand Nagara style, representing a blend of history, devotion, and nature. It is highly popular among both pilgrims and nature lovers.

Historical & Mythological Significance

According to mythology, Lord Shiva took this form to defeat the demon Bhima, son of Kumbhakarna, who was terrorizing the region. After a fierce battle, Shiva destroyed the demon and manifested as a Jyotirlinga at the request of the gods. The temple was built in the 18th century by Maratha statesman Nana Phadnavis, featuring a famous Portuguese bell at the entrance.

Open daily from 4:30 AM to 9:30 PM. Main events: - Kakad Aarti: 4:30 AM - General Darshan: 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, and 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM - Evening Aarti: 7:30 PM.

Entry is free. No VIP tickets are sold. During peak festival days, the queues can take 2 to 4 hours. Special Abhishek Puja tickets can be obtained at the office.

Decent and comfortable clothing is required. Avoid shorts or revealing clothing. Sturdy footwear is recommended as you need to climb down about 200 steps from the parking lot to the temple.
