Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Guide: Ujjain Bhasma Aarti, Timings & Route
Situated on the banks of the holy Shipra River in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, the Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the most powerful Jyotirlingas. It is unique as the only Jyotirlinga facing south (Dakshinamurthi), which represents the lord of death, Mahakal. Famous for its daily pre-dawn 'Bhasma Aarti', the temple features the grand, newly constructed Mahakal Lok Corridor, which has transformed Ujjain into a world-class spiritual destination.

Historical & Mythological Significance
Ujjain (ancient Avantika) is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism. According to scriptural accounts, Lord Shiva appeared in his fierce Mahakal form to destroy a demon named Dushana who was tormenting the residents. Devotees requested Shiva to reside permanently here, and he established himself as the Jyotirlinga. The temple was destroyed by Iltutmish in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 18th century by the Maratha general Ranoji Shinde.
