Situated at an altitude of 5,200 feet in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the most revered Shaktipeeths in the world. Annually attracting millions of devotees, the pilgrimage (Yatra) represents a journey of deep faith. Devotees chant 'Jai Mata Di' during the 13 km trek from the base town of Katra to witness the Goddess, who manifests inside the cave in the form of three natural rock formations called the Pindies.

Historical & Mythological Significance

Vaishno Devi is believed to be an incarnation of the combined spiritual energies of Goddesses Kali, Lakshmi, and Saraswati to destroy the demon Bhairon Nath. According to legends, Vaishno Devi was observing penance when Bhairon Nath tried to pursue her. She fled into the mountains, halting at Banganga, Charan Paduka, and Ardhkuwari cave (where she meditated for 9 months). Finally, she took shelter in the Holy Cave. When Bhairon Nath cornered her, she assumed the form of Maha Kali and decapitated him. Before dying, Bhairon repented, and the merciful Mata blessed him saying that no devotee's Yatra would be complete without visiting the Bhairon temple located uphill.
